John Cena Will Be Booed out of MetLife Stadium If He Wins at WrestleMania XXIX

According to, via, John Cena is all but guaranteed to walk out of WrestleMania XXIX as the new WWE Champion with a win over The Rock on April 7.

“ is reporting that it is almost a guarantee that John Cena will defeat The Rock at Wrestlemania 29 at MetLife Stadium in just over a month. It’s being said that backstage officials feel he needs to win this match, and that they expect Cena to be booed out of the arena. Cena has lost the past two Wrestlemania main events, and this could be the redemption victory to have him regain the championship. The Rock is currently being scheduled to appear at Extreme Rules in May, but that is not saying he will still be champion or compete.”

None of this should be of any surprise to anyone who has followed the WWE closely over the last few years. John Cena has been on the short end of the last two WrestleMania main events; He lost at WrestleMania XXVII to the Miz (with help from The Rock) and lost last year’s main event to his WrestleMania XXIX opponent, The Rock.

WrestleMania is a crowd full of die hard fans who have traveled to come to this one show. These fans typically have shown a less than enthusiastic support of Cena as his superman persona has grown stale over the last nine years.

Cena remains popular with the younger crowds, and his merchandise sales are untouchable compared to the other superstars, but in the biggest Cena matches at PPVs the crowd is typically partisan against the 10-time WWE Champion.

This partisanship can be seen in a number of matches. Maybe the biggest match in the last couple years was at the 2011 Money in the Bank PPV, where WWE Champion Cena was taking on CM Punk in the main event. Granted this was in Punk’s hometown of Chicago, so that also played a big factor in it.

Another, more relevant, example would be last year’s WrestleMania XXVIII match versus The Rock. Though there were obviously some Cena fans in attendance, the crowd was clearly behind the People’s Champion.

It will be interesting to see what will happen if Cena does indeed win the title back next month and how the rowdy New York crowd will react to the victory.
