WWE: The Five Most Anti-Cena Crowds in History

Cena sad

For the last ten years John Cena has been the most polarizing superstar on the WWE roster. Basically you either love him or you hate.

Most crowds show this split of love for Cena through their “Let’s go Cena, Cena sucks” chants, but every once in a while a crowd will be disproportionally skewed against Cena. Ahead are the five most Anti-Cena crowds in history.

5) 2006 Unforgiven PPV vs Edge

Location, location, location. This is one of the most important factors of an Anti-Cena crowd. There are just certain places and factors that can lead to Cena being booed out of the building. This was the case of the 2006 Unforgiven PPV that was held at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto.

Cena was challenging the WWE Champion Edge in the champions own backyard. The crowd was clearly behind Edge and let Cena know it. Cena was booed at the entrance and even more so after winning the title back for the third time in his career.

4) WrestleMania XXII vs. HHH

The animosity for Cena was slowly growing following WrestleMania XXI’s win over JBL for Cena’s first WWE Championship. Even though he was a face, crowds were turning sour on his act.

Leading into WrestleMania XXII Cena was feuding with HHH. Many crowds were cheering for the heel HHH in the feud and this came to a head at WrestleMania XXII. Mania this year was held in a city that will make another appearance on this list, Chicago.

Cena would end up retaining his title over HHH, much to the dismay of the Windy City’s crowd.

3) Raw After WrestleMania XXVIII in Miami

We talked about it before, and it came into play again here. The location of WrestleMania XXVIII and the Raw following WrestleMania were both held in The Rock’s adoptive home of Miami, Florida.

The crowd created one of the greatest environments ever for a Monday Night Raw and were obviously not in Cena’s corner. This Raw had the return of Brock Lesnar to the WWE, which saw Lesnar hitting Cena with the F5 to the delight of the crowd. Cena had also lost the biggest match of his career the night before to The Rock. Definitely not the high point of Cena’s career.

2) Money in the Bank 2011 vs CM Punk

Chicago has never been a home away from home for John Cena. Add to the fact that CM Punk was culminating his biggest main event push smack dab in the middle of his hometown and you have a recipe for an Anti-Cena crowd. And boy did this recipe work.

Leading up to the match CM Punk had cut his now legendary “pipe bomb” promo on Cena and had fully intended on leaving the company following the match. Punk ended up resigning with the WWE shortly before the match and won his first WWE Championship that night in what can only be called a classic.

1) ECW One Night Stand vs RVD

This New York crowd at the 2,500 seat Hammerstein Ballroom had it all. They threw toilet paper, gave middle fingers, and shouted chants of “F*** you, Cena”, “You can’t wrestle” and “Same old sh*t”. There was nothing the champion Cena could do to change the minds of these fans.

RVD, an alumni of ECW, won his first, and only, WWE Championship that night. This is probably lucky for Cena, because if he had won, the crowd may have rioted. Crazy crowd, crazy moment, and the most Anti-Cena crowd in history.
